Structural Health Monitoring
Civil infrastructure may be damaged due to a variety of causes such as earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, high winds, continuous ambient vibrations due to traffic and wind, corrosion, high temperature, cumulative crack growth, degradation of columns, joints, and beams, and impact by a foreign object. Hence, a system capable of monitoring and assessing the structural performance automatically is highly desirable to locate damage early and take remedial actions in a timely fashion to enhance structural safety and prevent structural failure thus avoiding human and economic losses. For these reasons, we are proposing and developing new methodologies and new signal processing techiques capables of assessing the intregity of civil strcutures. Further, we have designed and created experimental structures, which help us to generte different damages into them in order to observe their real beahivor under different situations.
Condition-Monitoring of Rotatory Machinery
In recent years, the development of monitoring systems for fault detection and diagnosis of rotatory machinery has been of fundamental importance for industry applications. From this type of machinery, the squirrel-cage induction motors (SCIMs), constituting ~89% of the power in industrial plants, are widely used in industry, because they are low cost, easy to maintain, highly rugged, and easy to control. For inherent operating reasons, during their service life, SCIMs are subject to unavoidable mechanical and electrical failures produced by environmental, thermal, or electrical stresses. Yet, they can continue operating under specific fault conditions, but their performance and lifetime are degraded, which eventually leads to a reduction of the expected production, thus causing an increase in the operation costs. Furthermore, if the fault continues, it can be hazardous to other machinery and people. For these reasons, we are proposing and developing new methodologies and new signal processing techiques capables of assessing the intregity of rotatory machines. Further, we have designed and created experimental systems, which help us to generte different damages into them in order to observe their real beahivor under different situations.
Condition-Monitoring of Human Body
In recent years, the development of monitoring systems for diagnosis of different sickness such as: epilpsy (EP), Alzhaimer (AZ), Mild congintive imparement (MCI), diabetes, cancer, among others, has been of fundamental importance for health sector. In this sense, we are proposing and developing new methodologies capables of assessing the intregity of human being of diferent sickness such as AZ, Arrhythmias, MCI, as well as the investigation of the brain in order to generate systems that allow to the people perform different activities by themselves.
